How to Set New Year’s Goals Effectively
The New Year always brings along a breath of hope, the atmosphere of a fresh start, and the motivation to create ambitious plans. It’s a great time to re-evaluate your habits and start working towards fulfilling your dreams. Unfortunately, research shows that as many as 80% of New Year’s resolutions are never realized as many people abandon them already in the first weeks of January. Why is it so? How can we increase our chances of success? Today I’ll tell you about tried and tested strategies that will help you set your goals and achieve them successfully.
1. Set Specific, Measurable Goals (SMART)
One of the most common mistakes in planning resolutions is being too general when defining them, for example “I want to lose weight” or “I will be healthier.” We should set more specific goals instead, such as: “I want to lose 10 pounds in 3 months” or “I will exercise three times a week for 30 minutes.” The SMART method helps you create clear goals that are easier to achieve.
Let’s have a look at an example of how to write a SMART goal that has been initially defined as I want to be healthier
- Specific: „I want to improve my health through healthy nutrition and regular physical activity”.
- Measurable: „I will have five portions of fruit and vegetables a day and exercise for 30 minutes at least three times a week”.
- Achievable: „I have time and access to healthy food and the ability to plan meals and short workouts every day”.
- Relevant: „I want to be healthier to feel better, have more energy, and prevent illness”.
- Time-bound: „I will start making these changes from the first week of January and maintain them for the next three months, and then I will evaluate the results.”.
Thanks to this approach, the goal becomes more specific, measurable and easier to achieve, while at the same time we can monitor progress and adjust actions accordingly.
2. Find Your WHY
Understanding why you want to achieve a goal increases motivation and persistence. Goals based on deep personal values are more engaging and lasting. For example, if your goal is to change your eating habits, it’s worth considering whether you’re doing it for better health, more energy, or to be a role model for your children.
The real WHY acts as an anchor that helps you get through the tough times and get back on track.
3. Break Big Goals into Smaller Steps
One of the most common reasons for abandoning resolutions is being overwhelmed by their size. It is worth breaking large goals into small, easier-to-achieve steps. If you dream of running a marathon, start with regular 10-minute runs. Every small success strengthens your belief in your own abilities, which is key to building lasting motivation.
4. Use the Power of Visualization and Rewards
Visualization is a tool that strengthens motivation and helps you focus on your goal. Imagine what your life will look like after you’ve achieved it. Visualization is an effective technique in the process of change – from imagining success to the emotions that accompany it.
Don’t forget to reward yourself for your progress. Even small successes, such as a week of regular training, are worth celebrating. The reward could be a relaxing evening, buying a new book, or devoting more time for your favorite hobby.
I also often reach for the Gratitude Practice, which you can find in the Balance section of my app. This meditation along with all the other ones help me appreciate myself and free myself from the tensions that can also be caused by excessive expectations of quick results.
5. Find Support within a Community and Find Companions
Social support plays a significant role in achieving long-term goals. Working in the same direction with friends, family, or an online group provides a sense of community and additional motivation.
Find someone to go with you – a workout buddy, a support group, or a community with similar goals. Working together is a powerful way to increase commitment.
6. Get Ready for Difficulties and Stay Flexible
Every change comes with challenges. It is important to accept that obstacles may appear along the way. A flexible approach to the goal helps to survive motivational crises and minimizes the feeling of failure. Missing one training session is not the end – it is important to get back on track and not lose faith in yourself.
Summary
The New Year is a great opportunity to have a look at our future selves and plan changes that will improve the quality of our life. Thanks to the SMART principle, dividing goals into small steps, social support and a flexible approach, you will increase your chances of success. Let this year be a time to implement your plans, enjoy every progress and build a new, better chapter of life.
I do hope that every step you take this year will bring you closer to fulfilling your dreams. May this time be full of energy, satisfaction and self-confidence. Have a wonderful 2025, full of successes and beautiful moments!
