Is It Safe to Dye Your Hair When Pregnant?
I have always looked for tried-and-tested information on hair care. During photo sessions and other events my head is subjected to many hair styling methods, drying, etc. After all, like every woman, I want to feel well-groomed both before and during pregnancy. However, my baby’s health is THE MOST IMPORTANT to me. First of all, I always check whether I can use a given product during pregnancy. I READ THE INGREDIENTS OF COSMETIC PRODUCTS, and that’s how I knew what Phlov cosmetics should be like 🙂 You can read about my hair care ideas HERE. Today let’s take a closer look at dyeing during pregnancy!
Dyeing – allowed or banned?
You often ask me about it in the comments or messages. That’s why I decided to look more closely at this topic. I asked doctors and hairdressers both in Poland and in Germany about hair dyeing. Let’s see what I’ve found!
Medical reports
Most studies indicate that the ingredients found in hair dyes are not highly toxic. Remember, however, to avoid products with ammonia, although it is difficult to find them on store shelves now. The new generation of dyes does not create toxic fumes when applied. In addition, our skin can only absorb small amounts of hair dye, and it does not enter the bloodstream. This small amount is not considered harmful to the fetus. Specialists in the field of breastfeeding women are of the same opinion. Although no data or studies on women who have undergone hair treatments while breast-feeding are available, knowledge of dye components suggests that chemicals are not absorbed into the bloodstream. Therefore, the likelihood of them getting into breast milk and posing a risk to the baby is very unlikely.
However, if you still hesitate and prefer to be cautious (I know something about it!), there are several safer alternatives to consider, e.g. avoiding dyeing from the root of the hair and leaving about 1 cm. Another idea you might consider is using natural plant dyes in the form of coloring oil.
However, I always say it’s best to consult your doctor. Some doctors recommend dyeing hair only from the second or third trimester of pregnancy.
Hairdresser’s opinion
My irreplaceable Marylka Duda agreed to express her opinion on hair dyeing while pregnant:
“When coloring with permanent dye, you should avoid inhaling the vapors that accompany it. These contain ammonia, which has very strong chemical vapors. It is recommended to avoid dyes which contain this substance. New generation dyes without ammonia are now available.
If you don’t have gray hair and you want to refresh your hair color, then you can try some of the best-selling hair color oils on the market as their ingredients are 98% natural 🙂
And if you want to be 100% sure, go for balayage or highlights. During this procedure, strands of hair are separated from the scalp and the product does not come in contact with the skin. And the problem is fixed :)”
As you can see, the opinions of both doctors and specialists from the hairdressing industry are unequivocal: they see no contraindications for dyeing hair during pregnancy. However, if you have any doubts, ask your doctor. Express your doubts and you will surely get professional answers to your questions.
