Gastric reflux
Gastric reflux – by this term gastroesophageal reflux disease is called. The main symptom of it is heartburn, which is caused by swallowed food (usually with stomach acid) moving back to the gullet.
The gullet (oesophagus) ends with a muscle that is called the lower sphincter. If it is not working properly – stomach contents return to the gullet. What is the reason of this action? It may be the lower sphincter damage or gastric emptying disorders. Pregnant women, obese people, people with scleroderma, diabetes, alcoholics sometimes suffer from gastric reflux as well.
The symptoms of gastric reflux occur in about 5-10% of highly developed countries every day (once a week in 20%). The incidence of this disorder is comparable among both men and women and it is increasing with age.
Heartburn is not the only symptom of gastric reflux. The others are: burning sensation behind the breastbone (similar to a heart attack), sour belching, pain in the upper part of the abdomen, problems with swallowing (dysphagia). You should consult your doctor!
