Fat is not as bad as often described! Today our star is avocado.

Until recently, it was believed that all fats are unhealthy. They lead to excessive weight gain and obesity and cause heart attacks as well as many other serious diseases. Hence, reduction and low-fat diets used to be very popular.

However, fats are necessary for the proper functioning of our body. Being a great source of fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, and K), they also provide energy and necessary fatty acids. In addition, animal fats are the source of cholesterol. Fat tissue acts as a thermal insulator and protects internal organs. Moreover, it serves as a good flavor carrier and a building material for cell membranes.

It is important to keep in mind that not all kinds of fats are equal. Some of them do not have beneficial influence on your health. You should know which ones to choose to help your body.

Avocado

I would like to dedicate today’s entry to one of my favorite sources of fat – avocado. I appreciate not only its delicate flavor but also endless healthy properties, and high nutritional value.

I realize that many people are afraid to consume avocado due to its high calorific value (avocado is a calorie-dense product and many people are afraid of consuming it) but believe me: the health benefits outweigh the high amount of calories.

Avocado is rich in healthy fats, mainly unsaturated fatty acids which are important for appropriate growth of human body and development of the nervous system and the brain. They improve your memory and increase your concentration. Fatty acids from avocado do not raise “bad” cholesterol level. They have anti-inflammatory properties, reduce the risk of blood clots and prevent hypertension.

Moreover, avocado is a great source of dietary fiber, vitamins (vitamin E, C, K, folic acid) and minerals (e.g. potassium, iron, magnesium, calcium).

Antioxidants from avocado (e.g. glutathione) are responsible for proper functioning of immune and nervous systems. It is also a source of lutein, which helps our vision.

If I have encouraged you to perform some culinary experiments with avocado, visit my blog where you can find many recipes for cocktails, salads, or even sweet snacks, like:
